Australia the World's Fattest Nation or is It?
Earlier this week the big news in Australia was how the country is now the World’s Fattest Nation:

Australia has become the fattest nation in the world, with more than 9 million adults now rated as obese or overweight, according to an alarming new report.

The most definitive picture of the national obesity crisis to date has found that Australians now outweigh Americans and face a future “fat bomb” that could cause 123,000 premature deaths over the next two decades.

If the crisis is not averted, obesity experts have warned, health costs could top $6 billion and an extra 700,000 people will be admitted to hospital for heart attacks, strokes and blood clots caused by excess weight.

The latest figures show 4 million Australians — or 26% of the adult population — are now obese compared to an estimated 25% of Americans. A further 5 million Australians are considered overweight.

At first glance it appears Aussies may be eating a little too much vegemite. However, I find this claim very dubious because just by walking around Australia it is very easy to see that yes there are plenty of obese people, but Australia still has a ways to go before catching America in the obesity department.

For example when you go to a shopping mall or grocery store in Australia you do not see people so obese that they need motorized carts to get around on like you regularly see in the US. I’m willing to be that if this study was based on per capita percentages the US would come out on top.

Australia the World's Fattest Nation or is It?

My suspicions about these findings are only heightened by the fact that Australia has the world’s second longest lived people:

AUSTRALIANS are now the second-longest-living people on earth with falling death rates for cancer, heart disease, stroke and injury, but the indigenous population continues to die earlier.

The latest comparative study of the nation’s overall health by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) - the government body responsible for compiling health statistics - shows that a baby born in Australia today can expect to live for 81.4 years, with men expected to live for 79 years and women for almost 84. Australians’ life expectancy is bettered only by the Japanese at 82.2 years.

If Australia really is the world’s fattest nation then maybe we all need to put on a few more pounds to live as long as the Aussies?

Hey Jonathan,

I find it interesting that you have a lot of interest in Australian affairs? Any connection there? Anyway, think you are right. If you say that I know a guy in your town who is around 200lbs, balding and drinks beer all the time, one would reply as you having just described more than half the town's men. LOL.....

I have lived before in Australia and actually served with the ADF. Likewise I have been all over New Zealand and have did training with the NZ defence force in Waiouru. So I know both countries very well and still have many friends there.

Lard is given away free to Australians. That's what makes the country so fat and look so well-fed. HA HA HA!!! Just kidding

Amazing country if you look at the number of athletes they produce in every sport. It never gives the impression that such a country is so obese. Sad state of affairs.

I don't think Australia is the world's fattest nation. A few months back it was the United States of America followed by Mexico. Where does Australia come to snatch the top spot out of the blue? Do you mean to say the highest number of obese people per capita or over all in numbers? I believe there is some ambiguity in this.

I don’t think Australia is fatter then America either. This study was based off of using a Body Mass Index. So if you are a little over the BMI you are considered obese. BMI are I believe are dubious.

I am willing to bet that per capita an American weighs more on average then an Australian. Australians are definitely getting bigger but I don’t think it is at a crisis stage yet like this Age article is trying to lead everyone to believe.

There is absolutely no proof that Australia is the world's fattest country. An article in The Australian today says exactly the same thing that I believe myself. Also, how can Australians have the second highest life expectancy in the world if they were so unhealthy?

This is a revelation. May be this would prove the long disputed theory that Australia has more gravity than the rest of the world. There are some people who were in fact very much into such research. Don't hear much about them these days though. I guess it is pretty evident now.

I don't think it is true. Whatever the story is the main reason for getting obese is not what you eat but what you drink. Soft drinks and beer are the two worst culprits when it comes to making people obese. To cure the disease called obesity, we must first root cola companies.
